Their next semi final encounter came in 1987. Above Bayern goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff stops a shot as Norbert Nachtweih, Roland Wohlfahrt and Klaus Augenthaler look on. The game finished 1-0 to Madrid but Bayern won the first leg in Munich 4-1 and thus moved on to the final, which they lost against Porto.
Bayern and Real Madrid had their first European encounter in 1976 in the semi final. After a 1-1 draw in Madrid Bayern won the second leg 2-0 in Munich thanks to two goals from Gerd Müller and advanced to the final.
One of Bayern München’s most bitter moments came in the 1987 European Cup final. Having gone 1-0 up through a goal by the above pictured Ludwig Kögl, Bayern let in 2 goals in three minutes to lose the final. Porto captain Joao Pinto also pictured.
Eintracht Braunschweig landed an unprecedented victory against Juventus Turin in the 1968 European Cup Quarter final first leg. Braunschweig surprised everyone and won the game 3-2. Unfortunately Juventus’s two away goals were enough to secure progression after winning the return leg 1-0 in Italy. Braunschweig’s Peter Kaack was the hero and villain, scoring three goals on the night, two for his own team and the other an own goal that ultimately eliminated his side on aggregate score.

Perhaps no game captures the intensity of the Bayern München/Real Madrid rivalry in Europe better than their meeting in the 1986/87 European Cup semi final. After winning the first leg in München 4-1 in which two Madrid players were sent off, Bayern traveled to a hostile Bernabeu.
Bayern players had to dodge batteries and stones thrown from the crowds and a knife barely missed goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff. Real Madrid won the game 1-0 in the end but it was not enough to progress. Above, Klaus Augenthaler gets his marching orders after being dismissed by the referee.

East Germany met West Germany when Dynamo Berlin drew Werder Bremen in the 1988/89 European Cup. Dynamo won the first leg 3-0 in Berlin before losing the second leg 5-0 in Bremen.
